Pulmonary Function Tests
Spirometry– Spirometry is a screening test to measure respiratory health. The most important values gained from this test are the FVC, or forced vital capacity, and the FEV₁, or forced expiratory volume in 1 second. FVC is the total amount of air that is forced out of the lungs after taking in a complete breath. FEV₁ is the amount of air that is forced out of the lungs in the first second after beginning to exhale. This test is completed while sitting inside a transparent “booth”. Most pulmonologists will want two sets of spirometry testing done: one prior to using a bronchodilator inhaler and one after, to see if the medication increases output.
